Melissa Rivers reflects on mom Joan's lasting fashion legacy
Melissa Rivers recently reflected on the fashion legacy of her late mother, Joan Rivers.
"My mother was always very over-the-top glam," Melissa shared in an interview with Page Six, adding that her mother's tendency to always look flawless inspired her to go "in the other direction."
The "Fashion Police" alum said her mother always "put a lot of time and effort and thought into what she was wearing."
Despite having different tastes in style, Melissa said her mom always tried to steer her right, adding, "She would have lots of comments when I was picking a dress … a lot of opinions on what I was wearing."
She also said women who love wearing shapewear should give some credit to Joan.
"My mother wore Spanx before they were cool -- she loved them," Melissa said. "She comes from a generation where proper undergarments made your clothes look better, so she was a huge shapewear fan — huge."
Melissa also reflected on the time her mother landed on the worst-dressed list at the 2004 Golden Globes. She said the dress was critically panned because it "photographed terribly."
"It was so pretty in person," Melissa said.
Joan was never one to shy away from discussing fashion secrets.
When speaking about getting older during a 2013 interview with E!, the beloved comedian said, "It's wonderful because you can gain weight and you can let your stomach go ... I am wearing Spanx now, and even the Spanx go 'Ugh!'"
Joan Rivers died on Sept. 4, 2014. She was 81.
