Returning a holiday gift? Here's everything you need to know
We all know what happens the week after opening presents under the tree, returning or exchanging them.
According to Optoro, 2 out of 3 consumers will return at least one gift this holiday season.
That's why we have everything you need to know about return etiquette, return windows and more.
How to make holiday returns seamless:
Tip 1: Let the gifter know you are going to exchange because you need the receipt or order number
Lori Bergamotto from Good Housekeeping told "GMA," "Remember, the gift giver wants to see you enjoy their gift. Do not feel uncomfortable about asking for a receipt."
Tip 2: Keep gift receipts and tags attached
Bergamotto added, "Be really mindful about holding on to receipts and tags because that is the best bet for a smooth return at the price the gift-giver paid."
Pro tip: Hold on to any unused gift cards, if you don't want them you can sell them back online for close to their original value.
Tip 3: Read the fine print
Bergamotto finished, "Read the fine print, some stores allow online purchases to be returned at their brick-and-mortar store and some do not. If you can return in person, you'll likely save shipping fees."
Tip 4: Check your return windows
Many retailers have extended their return window this year, but the terms are always changing.
- Amazon: Return by Jan. 31
- Apple: Return by Jan. 31
- Best Buy: Return by Jan. 16
- Macy’s: Return by Jan. 31
- Walmart: Return no later than 14-90 days from purchase
Tip 5: When making in-person returns, head to the malls early or late in the day to avoid the rush
If you do have to go to the mall during the busiest hours, be sure to utilize some retailer's curbside return option.
