Removing makeup at the end of the day might seem like a straightforward process, but mature skin can benefit from a gentler approach.

We've explored everything from what mature skin needs in a foundation to caring for your brows and finding the right moisturizer, and now, we're tackling another important part of your routine: taking everything off.

We chatted with celebrity facialist Joanna Czech for her tips on removing makeup while keeping mature skin hydrated and looking as vibrant as possible.

The philosophy below also extends beyond the face for Czech, who recently became European Wax Center's chief smooth officer. She recommends treating the skin on the body with the same care, including choosing cleansers designed to clean without unnecessarily stripping or drying the skin.

"The goal is always the same," Czech said. "Clean the skin, but don't over treat it."

Below is her step-by-step guide to removing makeup on mature skin.

Step 1: Start with a balm or cleansing oil

For the first step, Czech said she recommends an oil or balm cleanser to help dissolve makeup.

"For the first cleanse, I prefer a balm or oil," Czech said. "Massage it gently into the skin to dissolve makeup and SPF -- no aggressive rubbing."

Step 2: Double cleanse, but only when you need to

Double cleansing can be helpful for mature skin, particularly when you're wearing makeup or SPF, but Czech said it doesn't need to become an overly complicated routine.

After removing makeup with a balm or oil, she recommends following with a milky cleanser or gentle gel cleanser. The goal of that second cleanse is to remove anything left behind while still respecting the skin.

Makeup-removing wipes can also work as a first step when needed, but Czech cautions that they shouldn't replace washing your face altogether.

Step 3: Hydrate immediately after cleansing

What you put on your skin after removing makeup is just as important. Czech said the exact products will depend on your skin's individual needs and condition, but she recommends starting with a pH-controlling toner containing hydrating ingredients before following with appropriate serums and moisturizer.

Ultimately, the goal isn't to cleanse mature skin as aggressively as possible. It's to effectively remove makeup, SPF and buildup without leaving the skin feeling tight, dry or over-treated.
