Senior Terror Leader Killed by US Airstrike in Syria
— -- The U.S. military killed a key terrorist leader inside Syria in early July, senior officials told ABC News today.
Muhsin al-Fadhli, a senior member of the Khorasan terror group, was killed in the airstrike, according to these officials.
Military officials said al-Fadhli was killed in a targeted drone strike while he was traveling in a vehicle near Sarmada, Syria on July 8.
The longtime operative has a history of participating in a number of terror plots throughout the Middle East and intelligence officials believe he had prior knowledge of the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington D.C.
Al-Fadhli was considered a senior member of external operations for Khorasan, responsible for organizing attacks outside the country. Like Khorasan itself, al-Fadhli has strong connections to the Nusra Front, a branch of Al-Qaeda that operates inside Syria and Lebanon.
Al-Fadhli, who had previously operated inside Iran, was listed on the State Department's Rewards for Justice program which offered up to $7 million for information leading to his location.
