Rare Amur Leopard Cub Born at Pittsburgh Zoo

— -- The Pittsburgh Zoo proudly welcomed another member to its family earlier this month. Candy, an Amur Leopard, gave birth to a cub on Feb. 4. Zoo officials did not announce the birth of the cub until today in order to give it time to bond with its mother.

Candy, 12, is the oldest Amur Leopard in North America to give birth. The sex of the cub is not yet known, and zoo officials won’t learn the cub's sex for another three to four weeks, when it undergoes a quick medical exam and testing.

Amur Leopards are extremely rare. According to Tracy Gray, public relations manager at the zoo, there are only 70 of these leopards in the wild. Gray also said that there are 221 Amur Leopards in captivity in North America, Europe and Japan.
