1 Dead, At Least 4 Injured in Lightning Strike in New York State
— -- One man has died and at least four others were injured from a lightning strike at a park in Poughkeepsie, New York, authorities said.
A 50-year-old man died after being taken to the hospital following the lightning strike Saturday, according to Vassar Brothers Medical Center spokesperson Tim Massie.
A total of three people injured in the strike were unresponsive when medics arrived at Mansion Square Park, Poughkeepsie police told ABC News. They were not directly struck by lightning but were standing under a tree that was struck, the hospital spokesperson said. The charge from the lightning conducted through the ground and struck them, he said.
Two others injured in the strike were taken to Mid-Hudson Regional Medical Center.
The group, ranging in age from 46 to 55 years old, was standing together near a bench when the lightning struck, police said.
The strike apparently occurred around 4:15 p.m., scanner traffic indicates. Poughkeepsie is about two hours north of the New York City.
