How one TikTok creator uses food to make stunning celebrity portraits
An artist on TikTok has captured the attention of millions for serving up stunning celebrity portraits with an edible twist.
Graphic designer Ruby Perman creates beautiful celebrity concoctions using everyday foods you would find in your kitchen.
From Celine Dijon to Katy Berry, her masterpieces are delicious and delightful to watch come together on TikTok.
Perman told "Good Morning America" the idea for her food art came around the start of the pandemic and being on social media.
"We all had to stay at home so much ... I took a little picture of myself and then on a plate, and I had a mango in my kitchen. So I sliced up the mango and I made myself a mango skirt," she said.
Wanting to try her hand at a different subject, she focused on doing celebrity portraits.
"One of my favorite things to do before the pandemic was watching the red carpets, and just seeing all the celebrities in their extravagant gowns," she said.
Her first video of Jennifer Lawrence wearing a dress made up of pomegranate seeds took off when Perman posted on TikTok.
"I made her a pomegranate dress using all the seeds as the skirt and then the top was like the peel," she said. "And that that post went viral and that's kind of how it all started."
The graphic designer-turned food stylist has since done upward of 100 celebrity portraits on TikTok, from Post Malone using melons to to Reese Witherspoon using, you guessed it, Reese's candy.
"Lately, I've been working with puns a lot. So I just did a Celine Dijon, where I use Dijon mustard to make her dress," Perman told "GMA."
Her viral work has even caught the attention of some of her famous subjects, like Laura Dern, "Stranger Things" star Noah Schapp and even Celine Dion herself.
"The most exciting was the Celine Dion one," she said. "She actually messaged me a couple days ago and asked if she could share that on her TikTok account."
The positive reactions from fans, famous or not, is something the food stylist never expected but a very welcome surprise that keeps Perman going.
"That's what the fun thing about TikTok is — you can pretty much do anything. And people will watch it and you know, they will find joy in whatever it is," she said.
