National Pizza Party Day: Make these Disney recipes with your kids
It's National Pizza Party Day! (As if you needed an excuse to eat pizza while in quarantine.)
Searches for "how to make pizza" have been one of the top queries on Google as people isolate at home and pass on ordering delivery.
To celebrate National Pizza Party Day, Disney shared kid-friendly recipes inspired by Disney and Pixar's "Toy Story" to bring Pizza Planet to your kitchen!
Below are the recipes to help families throw their own pizza party at home, both of which were developed to meet Disney's Mickey Check nutritional guidelines. These recipes are made using a custom Toy Story Pizza Maker, but can be made in any oven.
Toy Story Rocket Ship Pizza
Servings: 2 servings (1 slice per serving)
Ingredients:
1 large whole wheat naan (8-inch length)*
1/2 cup no salt added, no sugar added tomato sauce
1/3 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup cauliflower florets, roughly chopped
1/2 cup finely chopped sun-dried tomatoes (about 5), dry, not packed in oil
2 mini red sweet peppers, 1 finely chopped (for fins), 1 sliced lengthwise into strips (for fire)
1 mini yellow sweet pepper, sliced lengthwise into strips (for "blast off")
1 mini orange sweet pepper, sliced lengthwise into strips (for "blast off")
*As an alternative to naan, use 1 (8-inch) whole wheat pita cut into the shape of the rocket ship.
Additional Items Needed:
Toy Story Pizza Maker
Knife
Cutting board
Medium bowl
Directions:
Plug in the Toy Story Pizza Maker to preheat.
Prepare the naan rocket ship. On a large table or clean surface area, slice the naan to make the body tube (or main body) of the rocket ship. Use the remaining naan to cut into two fin shapes. Place the left and right fins underneath the body tube.
Evenly cover the naan rocket ship (body tube and fins) with tomato sauce, leaving ½-inch border without any sauce. Kids can help with this part.
On the body tube piece of naan, evenly sprinkle the cheese and chopped cauliflower. Add an extra sprinkle of cheese where the fins meet the body tube to help them adhere.
On the two fins, evenly disperse the chopped sun-dried tomatoes and the one chopped red mini sweet pepper.
Once the Toy Story Pizza Maker light turns green and your rocket ship is ready to bake, carefully transfer the prepared rocket ship into the pizza maker. Bake for five to seven minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the crust becomes golden brown.
Carefully remove the pizza and let cool, about five minutes. Once cooled, place the pizza on a large platter or cutting board. Arrange the remaining red, orange and yellow mini sweet pepper strips under the pizza to form the fuel for the rocket ship "blast-off."
Alien Veggie 'Meatball' Pizza
Servings: 8 servings (1 slice per serving)
Ingredients:
Alien Meatballs
2 cups cauliflower florets
¼ cup store-bought basil pesto
2 large egg whites
1 cup green peas, cooked
½ cup white beans, canned, rinsed and drained (such as Cannellini or white kidney)
½ cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon onion powder
Alien Faces:
4-5 medium asparagus spears, cut into 48, 1-inch asparagus tips (for ears and antennas)
1 ounce goat cheese (for eyes)
¼ cup black olives, sliced into thin rounds (for eyes) and chopped into small pieces (for mouths)
Pizza:
1 cup no salt added, no sugar added tomato sauce
1 (16 ounce) 100% whole wheat pizza dough crust
½ cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
Additional Items Needed:
Toy Story Pizza Maker
Sheet pan
Parchment paper
Mixing aid
Tablespoon measure or medium spoon
Medium bowl
Rolling pin, bottle or jar (optional)
Directions:
Make the alien meatballs:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
Process cauliflower in a food processor or other mixing aid until finely ground. Next, add the pesto, egg whites, peas, white beans, whole wheat flour and onion powder. Pulse a few times, just until fully incorporated so the mixture doesn't become too fine.
Use a tablespoon measure or medium spoon to divide the mixture into 16 veggie "meatballs." Kids can help with this part.
Pinch the sides of the veggie "meatball" to form a football shaped alien head.
Set the veggie "meatballs" on a sheet pan and bake in oven until cooked through, about 20 minutes. Carefully remove from the oven and add the asparagus tips to each alien to form the antennas and ears. Bake for two more minutes to secure the pieces.
Carefully remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes.
Once cool, craft the alien faces. Roll the goat cheese into tiny rounds to make three eyes on each alien. Add one thin olive round to the center of each eye. Use larger olive pieces to form the mouths. Be creative! Form different facial expressions -- smile, surprise, scared! Kids can help with this part.
Make the pizza:
Plug in the Toy Story Pizza Maker to preheat.
Roll and stretch the dough to the size of the Toy Story Pizza Maker, about 11 inches round. If available, use a rolling pin, bottle or jar to evenly flatten the dough. Pinch the dough along the outer edge to form the crust. Kids can help with this part.
Once the Toy Story Pizza Maker light turns green, add the dough. Bake until the crust is lightly golden brown, about 12 minutes.
Next, spread the tomato sauce evenly across the dough, leaving a 1-inch border without any sauce. Add the cheese evenly over the sauce and bake for an additional two to three minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Remove from the Toy Story Pizza Maker and let cool, about five minutes. Once cooled, top with the alien faces (two aliens per slice), slice into eight pieces, and enjoy!
