Mindy Kaling will co-write 'Legally Blonde 3,' and Elle Woods approves
Actress Mindy Kaling is officially involved with "Legally Blonde 3" -- but only behind the scenes.
Kaling and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" co-creator Dan Goor will co-write the film's script, she announced on social media Tuesday.
Reese Witherspoon, who will reprise her role as Elle Woods in the film, as well as produce the movie, co-signed the hire in an Instagram post of her own.
"Finally some use for my Elle Woods fan fiction! So excited to be reunited with my friends @reesewitherspoon @laurenneu and Dan Goor to work on this movie. Elle Woods is so iconic, proving you can be girly and smart at the same time. Bend and snap people!" Kaling wrote in her post caption.
Added Witherspoon: "Great news alert!! Some things are just meant to be! I'm SOOO excited to have @MindyKaling and #DanGoor writing Legally Blonde 3! This is #ElleWoodsApproved!"
Witherspoon, 44, first confirmed that "Legally Blonde 3" was in the making in 2018, in an interview with a Deadline. During the talk, she said the film would embody "Woods' idealism and pink-dominant wardrobe."
Last year, Witherspoon told Entertainment Tonight that the movie had been written, but nothing had been shot.
Now, Deadline has confirmed that Kaling and Goor will pen a script with "an entirely new fresh spin."
"She's a very beloved character," Witherspoon told ET of Elle Woods. "You just want her to go on a hero's journey, like she does in the first movie, and I'm having a great time working on it."
