Maisie Williams on that 'Game of Thrones' scene everyone's talking about
Goes without saying, but major "Game of Thrones" spoilers ahead.
On last night's episode, a lot of things transpired in anticipation with the big showdown against the Night King and his army. But the one scene that has "Thrones" fans talking around the globe today was between Arya and Gendry.
After a lot of flirting in the better part of the first two episodes of the season, the duo finally embrace, as Arya says she wants to know what it's like to be with someone before she possibly dies at the hands of the Night King.
Maisie Williams spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the shocking scene and actually said she thought it was a joke at first.
"At first, I thought it was a prank,” Williams said. “I was like, ‘Yo, good one.’ And [the producers were] like, ‘No, we haven’t done that this year.’ Oh f---!”
She continued, "I got to the read-through and I’m reading the scene and thought, ‘Oh, we’re actually going to do this. When do I shoot this? I need to go to the gym.’ A whole list of things.”
Williams is now 22, but when she started on "Thrones," she was just 11, so the idea of her romantic union with Gendry certainly threw some fans. The producers and Williams decided to keep it PG-13 to avoid being gratuitous.
"I don’t think it’s important for Arya to flash. This beat isn’t really about that. And everybody else has already done it on the show," Williams said.
Instead, you see Arya's back and her scars from her journey on the show. It's more about her growth as a person than showing skin.
"It was really interesting because it’s a very human relationship for Arya. This is something she’s stayed away from, an emotion we’ve never really seen her engage with," Williams said. "This may be is a moment where Arya accepts death tomorrow, which she never does — ‘Not Today.’ So it was that moment where she says, ‘We’re probably going to die tomorrow, I want to know what this feels like before that happens.’ It’s interesting to see Arya be a bit more human."
