'Mean Girls' Turns 10: 9 Ways the Plot Would Be Different Now
April 30, 2014 -- intro: Believe it or not, "Mean Girls," the comedy about one high school's popular clique, premiered 10 years ago today. While some elements of the film remain eternal, other things have changed dramatically. (No, we're not just talking about Lindsay Lohan's ups and downs in Hollywood!) Here are a few things that might be tweaked if the film was released in 2014 instead of 2004.
quicklist: 1title: The Burn Book Would Be Online text: Maybe the Burn Book would be in a private Facebook group, or maybe it would be on a password-protected blog. Either way, the idea of a good old fashioned scrapbook of insults is nice, but probably not the way these girls would want to document their gossip. (Tracking them down using an IP address would be easier too!)media: 23520420
quicklist: 2title: Regina, Damian and Janis Would Have Instagramtext: ... And as a result, they would have found out about Cady's party much faster than they did.
quicklist: 3title: So Long, Juicy Couturetext: Hello, Lululemon! Sweatpants may be all that fit Regina George, but she wouldn't own an arsenal of velour at this point. As for the girls' uniforms of tiny Louis Vuitton purses and even tinier skirts? Those would be updated too. media: 23520752
quicklist: 4title: Google Would Be Hugetext: Regina ate Kalteen bars for weeks before her boyfriend told her that they were designed to help consumers pack on pounds. A simple Google search would have cleared that up pretty quickly.
quicklist: 5title: They'd All Have Smart Phonestext: If Mrs. George made good on her claim that she's "a cool mom," she'd videotape the Plastics' "Jingle Bell Rock" performance with her phone, not a camcorder.media: 23520166
quicklist: 6title: ... Including the Plasticstext: So much for kicking over that boombox: What are the odds that "Jingle Bell Rock" wouldn't be played from a smart phone? As for their three-way calling: Maybe they'd Facetime, or take a photo of a text conversation and send it wide.media: 23520330
quicklist: 7title: Miley Would Have a Mention text: Remember when Regina's sister was dancing to Kelis's "Milkshake"? Today, she'd be twerking to Miley.
quicklist: 8title: There Would Be a Bullying Lecturetext: The idea of Ms. Norbury's girls-only seminar is nice, but now, bullying is taken more seriously than ever. What are the odds that the school wouldn't hold a serious lecture for everyone?media: 23520537
quicklist: 9title: Fetch Still Wouldn't Happentext: But we're sure they "literally" "can't even."
