Emmy nominations 2019: Snubs and surprises
The morning of the Emmy nominations ceremony is always thrilling for some -- and a letdown for others.
The cast and crew of "Game of Thrones" are undoubtedly celebrating, as the HBO series earned 32 nominations, the most for any program in a single season.
But while "Game of Thrones"' success was hardly shocking, there were several surprises over the course of the morning. Some were happy, and others were not, as some nominees who seemed to be shoo-ins didn't earn nods.
Snubs
Though Julia Roberts is an Academy Award-winning actress with decades of experience in Hollywood, she didn't star in a TV series until last year, in "Homecoming." Many expected her to nab a nomination in the best dramatic actress category, but she didn't. Supporting actor Bobby Canavale also came up short, as did male lead Stephan James. In fact, "Homecoming" only earned one nomination, for cinematography.
Netflix's "GLOW" earned six nominations this year, including one for actress Betty Gilpin, but the series failed to take home a nomination for best comedy again, and its star, Alison Brie, was also shut out.
“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” ended after four seasons this year, and failed to pick up any Emmy nominations.
CBS All Access' series, "The Good Fight," was expected to get some recognition, with maybe a nod for its star, Christine Baranski, but it received no love from the Academy.
Pamela Adlon's FX series, "Better Things," earned her nominations in 2017 and 2018, but the show did not get acknowledged at all this year.
"The Big Bang Theory," a fan favorite, only received three nods for its final season, with no individual nomination for its star, Jim Parsons.
Surprises
"Schitt's Creek," a POP TV series that has developed a cult following, picked up four nominations, including best comedy series, and individual nods for stars Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara.
Though many have gushed about Amazon's "Fleabag," a series created by its star, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, it was unclear whether the Academy would award it with Emmy nominations. Did it ever. "Fleabag" picked up 11, including best comedy, best comedic actress, and two best supporting actress nods.
"This Is Us" received nine nominations, and for the first time, Mandy Moore's performance as the Pearson family matriarch was recognized with a best dramatic actress nod.
Netflix's "When They See Us" was expected to receive a few Emmy nominations, but few would've expected it to take home 16.
