David Beckham knighted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle
Soccer legend David Beckham is now Sir David Beckham after being knighted Tuesday by King Charles III.
Beckham received the honor in a ceremony at Windsor Castle attended by his parents and his wife Victoria Beckham, who designed the suit he wore for the occasion.
"I couldn't be prouder," David Beckham, who received the honor for his service to sport and charity, said Tuesday, according to ESPN. "People know how patriotic I am -- I love my country.
"I've always said how important the monarchy is to my family," he continued. "I'm lucky enough to have traveled around the world, and all people want to talk to me about is our monarchy. It makes me proud."
When Queen Elizabeth II, Charles' mother, died in 2022, David Beckham famously waited in line for 12 hours to pay his respects to the queen's coffin at Westminster Hall.
"Everyone wants to be here and be a part of this experience and celebrate what Her Majesty has done for us," he told reporters at the time.
David Beckham, 50, captained England's national football team for six years during his 20-year career, which also saw him play in the United States, Spain and France, according to his biography.
After retiring from professional soccer in 2013, he became the president and co-owner of MLS team Inter Miami.
