Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o and Oscar-nominated director Ava DuVernay are just a few of the people who took to social media recently to take part in the #BrownSkinGirlChallenge, sparked by Beyoncé and her daughter, Blue Ivy.
The famous mother-daughter duo appear together on "Brown Skin Girl," from "The Lion King" soundtrack, "The Gift," and in the song, Nyong'o is name-checked as a beauty.
The celebratory lyrics, which also mention Naomi Campbell and Kelly Rowland, prompted people all over the world to share photos of themselves.
“Brown Skin Girl. Thank you @Beyonce for this Gift!!," Nyong'o captioned her post, adding the hashtag, #BrightnessIsJustWhoYouAre.”
DuVernay retweeted a video of three girls dancing and captioned it, "To me, it doesn’t get much better than this. Brava, @Beyonce. You’ve done a beautiful thing here. I see pride. I see joy. #BrownSkinGirlChallenge."
As previously reported, Beyoncé called "The Gift," which she executive-produced and curated, a “love letter to Africa.”
“I wanted to make sure we found the best talent from Africa, and not just use some of the sounds and did my interpretation of it," she told ABC News. "I wanted it to be authentic to what is beautiful about the music in Africa.”
