A 57-year-old woman was hospitalized after a shark bit her on the upper thigh in Vero Beach, Florida, on Sunday.

Mary Marcus was able to swim back to shore after she was attacked near the Costa d’Este Resort, Officer Anna Carden of the Vero Beach Police Department told ABC News.

She was taken to the Indian River Medical Center in stable condition, Carden said.

Hospital staff described the attack as an exploratory shark bite, according to police, which is when a shark swims away after one bite.

It’s unclear if Marcus was a guest at the Coste d’Este Resort, where EMTs responded after the attack.

Marcus was the only victim reported, Carden said.
