What we know about the victims of the Abundant Life Christian School shooting

Authorities in Madison, Wisconsin, released the identities of the student and the teacher who were killed when police say a 15-year-old opened fire at the Abundant Life Christian School earlier this week.

The victims were identified as 42-year-old Erin M. West and 14-year-old Rubi P. Vergara. The victims' names were released late Wednesday evening by the Dane County medical examiner.

West had been a teacher at Abundant Life Christian School for four years, according to her obituary.

She served as a substitute teacher for three years, before accepting a staff position as the school's sub coordinator and in-building substitute teacher, "a role tailor made for her abundant skills and breadth of knowledge," Abundant Life Christian School said in a statement.

"Everybody wanted Erin in their room because she would continue the education," Barbara Wiers, Abundant Life Christian School's director of advancement, told Milwaukee ABC affiliate WISN. "You didn't have a day of learning that was lost when a teacher had to leave."

West served the school community with "grace, humor, wisdom, and -- most importantly -- with the love of Jesus," the school said.

The mom of three enjoyed "family camping trips, attending school sporting events, serving at Doxa Church, and spending time with her daughters and the rest of her family," her obituary stated.

A funeral service will be held for West on Monday at her church, Doxa Church, in Madison.

Rubi was a freshman who had been at Abundant Life Christian School since kindergarten, the school said. She was often seen with a book in her hand and had a "gift for art and music," the school said.

"Rubi was a blessing to her class and our school. She was not only a good friend, but a great big sister," the school said in a statement. "Yet, it was Rubi's love for Jesus that shined brightest and she shared His love with others by volunteering faithfully."

Wiers told WISN she taught Rubi Sunday School several years ago.

"Her name was perfect for her," Wiers said. "She shined with the light of Jesus."

The teen was remembered by her family as an "avid reader" who "loved art, singing and playing keyboard in the family worship band" and her dog and cat, her obituary stated.

A funeral service will be held for Rubi on Saturday at City Church in Madison.

"Our community continues to grieve following the tragic events at Abundant Life Christian School," Dane County Executive Melissa Agard said in a statement on Thursday. "I extend my heartfelt condolences to all who are impacted by this tragedy. Let us continue to support one another with compassion and care during this profoundly difficult time."

West and Vergara were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner.

Overall, six people were also injured in the shooting, police said. As of Wednesday evening, two students with life-threatening injuries remained in the hospital, police said in an update.

Four others -- identified previously as three students and a teacher -- have been released from the hospital, police said.

A candlelight vigil was held Tuesday night at the state capitol for the victims of the shooting.

"Yesterday, the Madison community experienced a terrible and traumatic event," Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said at the vigil. "We will never be the same, but we will get through and we will get through this together by relying on each other and taking care of each other."

The suspected shooter, 15-year-old Natalie "Samantha" L. Rupnow who was a student at the school, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. Officers did not fire their weapons.

The motive appears to be a combination of factors, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said at a news conference Tuesday.

"Everyone was targeted in this incident and everyone was put in equal danger," Barnes said.

However, police said they are still investigating whether there were specific targets in the shooting and are still working to determine a motive.
