Moisturizing is an essential part of every daily skincare routine. After washing your face, no matter your skin type -- dry, oily or sensitive -- you need moisture to help improve skin tone and texture, and cover up imperfections.
It's always beneficial to use a moisturizer that includes an SPF, but the type of moisturizer you should use varies depending on your skin type.
Check out these guidelines below on how to pick a facial moisturizer that's right for you.
For oily skin: Many people with oily skin are afraid of moisturizers since they're prone to breakouts, but all skin needs moisture! Look for water-based products that are noncomedogenic, or not likely to clog pores. Try an oil-free moisturizer or a serum to give your face the moisture it needs, without the extra shine. For dry skin: Moisturizing is essential for dry skin. If your skin is cracked, try oil-based moisturizers that contain propylene glycol or urea, which help keep skin moist. For excessive dryness, look for heavier, creamy moisturizers. If you're just starting a routine, you may have to reapply moisturizer a few times daily to keep skin moist. For combination skin: Choose an oil-based or cream moisturizer and apply it liberally when the skin is dry. When skin is normal, a water-based moisturizer that has a light, non-greasy feel is best.
For sensitive skin: Opt for moisturizers designed for sensitive skin types. Typically, these don't have fragrances or dyes, which can irritate skin. Also, make sure that your moisturizer has an SPF to protect you from UV rays, which tend to thin out the dermis, trigger the appearance of free radicals and increase the likelihood of allergy attacks for sensitive skin. As a general rule of thumb, here is what you should know to care for skin at any age:
30s: In your 30s, your skin loses its ability to retain water as it once did. Its renewal powers also slow down and it starts producing less collagen and elastin. Due to these factors, fine lines can start to develop, skin tone can turn dull and skin can begin to obtain a rough texture. Another common problem for this age group is increased skin sensitivity or conditions like rosacea. CLICK HERE for more information.
40s: When we are in our 40's, the aging process becomes more evident. You are more likely to have wrinkles and deep-set lines caused by exposure to the sun, pollution and stress. Skin also loses some of its elasticity. You may experience dry, chapped skin and discoloration. Try to avoid sun exposure and use other products to minimize the effects of aging before they become too difficult to get rid of! CLICK HERE for more tips.
50s: As you enter your 50's, your skin has also gone through five decades of wear and tear and will show clear signs of aging, such as wrinkles, fine lines, age spots and more. It's time to acknowledge that you can't get back the flawless skin of the past, but you can take steps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines. To keep your skin looking luminous, try updating your skin care routine, invest in effective anti-aging products and make sure you moisturize. CLICK HERE for more tips.
