Some made us laugh, some made us cry, still others left us scratching our heads to ask, "Why do they look like that?" But what they all shared in common was a viral, mass appeal.

These are Cheezburger's Top Animals of 2014, the six most popular creatures of the year.

"All of the animals that made our Top Animals of 2014 list have something unique about them - whether they have a memorable facial expression, have overcome challenges or just know how to rock a pair of sunglasses," said Emily Huh, Cheezburger's director of publicity.

"They all show that animals are not just animals, but they are like us humans and they can feel happiness, anger and even awkwardness," she said.

As we tip our caps to these Internet heroes, we also take a glimpse back at the cute and unusual moments that captured so many of us.

6. Frostie the Goat

A star since the day he was born in Australia, Frostie melted hearts as he learned to walk with a wheelchair, often sniffing at human friends on the farm and sanctuary where he lived. But Frostie's life was sadly cut short after succumbing to multiple medical issues.

4. Garfi, the Angry Cat

Sometimes scary, often scowling, but never boring, Garfi the Angry Cat gave Internet star Grumpy Cat a run for its money this year after his photographer human released various images of him looking aggravated at everything from books to turkey dinner.

3. Marnie the Dog

With her neck perpetually pitched to one side and her gait delightfully bouncy, Marnie was the Little Orphan Annie of the internet animal world. Having survived being homeless, the 12-year-old Shih Tzu gained fans quickly after being rescued by an owner who recognized her diamond-in-the-rough potential and began dressing her up for Instagram.

2. Tiny Hamsters

This one goes out to the little guys! It didn't matter whether these miniature rodents were dining on Lilliputian burritos or a bite-sized Thanksgiving feast, the Internet was game to watch videos of it all ad nauseum.
