2 family meals under $20: Chef Richard Blais' pizza bagels and BBQ pizza

Chef, restaurateur and "Starving for Attention" podcast host Richard Blais knows a thing or two about feeding a family and the father of two joined "Good Morning America" with a new recipe that saves on dough.

For the dollar dinner challenge, Blais made two meals for a family of four, all for under $20. His secret to success, bagels and pizza.

Bagels and Pizza

Bagel Dough

1 cup whole Greek yogurt

1 cup self rising flour

1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)

1 egg whisked (optional)

Everything spices (optional)

Directions

Mix dough by folding together with a spatula until combined.

Lightly flour a work surface and roll out dough into 12-inch logs / snake shape.

Fold the dough on top of itself to form a ring for bagel or bialy shape.

For pizza, make a ball of dough and gently roll out into a disc shape / English muffin size.

Brush each ring with the egg wash if using and sprinkle on whatever spices you like.

Bake at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes until brown.

For pizza, top each disc with pizza sauce and mozzarella or barbecue sauce and cheddar. Use whatever toppings you like.

Quick pizza sauce

Ingredients

1 can crushed tomatoes

2 cloves minced garlic or 1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 diced onion

2 teaspoons oregano

1 teaspoon salt

3-4 leaves fresh basil

Directions

Combine ingredients and cook slowly for 15 minutes. Chill the sauce in the fridge and use throughout a seven to 10 day period.

Blais Barbecue Pizza

Ingredients

3 tablespoons BBQ sauce

1/2 cup cooked chicken, beef or pork, shredded

1 tablespoon raw white onion diced

2 tablespoon cilantro chopped

1/2 cup cheddar cheese shredded

Directions

Combine meat and sauce and warm.

Richard's Tips:

Self-rising flour contains baking powder, which helps the dough to rise.

This dough is fast, doesn’t need yeast and can be made and baked within an hour.

Use any meat you have in your fridge or freezer -- if you need to purchase, try a cooked rotisserie chicken and shred at home.
