Classic wax-covered cheese has new dairy-free option

The poppable single-serving cheese rounds now have a plant-based option.

Babybel first introduced its plant-based and lactose-free product in the United Kingdom and now the cheese alternative is set to hit U.S. shelves in March, Bel Brands USA announced.

"This vegan snack has a good source of calcium and vitamin B12, and of course, loads of goodness," the company said. "It’s certified plant-based, and with smooth texture similar to mozzarella, it has all the deliciousness of real cheese, without the dairy."

The instantly recognizable red wax cheese packaging debuted in 1977 and this new product will get its own plant-inspired green wrapper. Bel Brand's USA has other existing plant-based products including the Nurishh and Boursin product lines.

The parent company has yet to release a list of retailers where the new Babybel product will be available.
