"This little one turned four yesterday. I could burst," Scorsone wrote Thursday. "So grateful for her journey into my life and for my journey into hers."

Scorsone, who plays Dr. Amelia Shepherd on the ABC series, penned an essay for "Good Morning America" last month about Pippa, who has Down syndrome. She is also the mother of 8-year-old Eliza and 10-month-old Lucinda.

According to Scorsone, Pippa is a little girl who has "rainbow-colored eyes" and "likes popcorn and Totoro and elephants." Although Pippa has Down syndrome, a condition in which a person has an extra 21st chromosome, "Pippa isn’t Down syndrome. Pippa is Pippa," she added.

"Regardless of the number of chromosomes or abilities we have, the gender we express, the money in our bank account, the color of our skin or the learning profile we respond to best, human beings have the same needs. We need love, safety, dignity and connection," Scorsone wrote. "But human beings are different, we are specific, and we need to be loved and supported individually. We are the unique and distinct notes of an infinite musical composition. We are every beautiful rainbow color refracted through the mysterious prism of life. We are equal, different and miraculous, like Pippa’s eyes."
