See ABC's 1980 Broadcast on John Lennon's Death

On this day 35 years ago, the world lost an icon when John Lennon was shot outside his New York home by Mark David Chapman. He was 40 years old.

On Dec. 8, 1980, ABC began the network's late-night news program with the news that the Beatles star had been shot three times. It's still a moment that echoes in history.

"He was rushed to New York's Roosevelt Hospital, but died a few minutes later," said anchor Ted Koppel. "Police have a suspect in custody."
